Stud Dogs
What a weird term “stud dog”………….sounds like life’s ambition of easy street and fast women. However, being a stud dog is anything but easy, or easy street. Being a stud dog is a lot like being a Bull. Some will make it, but most will become steers. Stud dogs are the cream of the crop in male dogs. Their accomplishments in the show ring, performance events and a rock solid temperament are only the basic cost of entry into this segment. Their real worth is producing the next generation of Weimaraner’s that propel the breed forward. Breeders will look at the dogs, examine a pedigree and utilize a crystal ball to see if “this stud” is the one that will make an indelible mark on the breed. Some male dogs are known as “pre potent producers”, meaning that they are known to consistently produce traits whether the are “linebred” or utilized in an “outcross” breeding. Maybe they will improve a bitches front, rear, head…….any number of traits really, that are important to a particular breeding or bitch. As they say……..the proof is in the pudding……..puppies. In my world, we do breedings to improve breed type, increase constistency and keep incredible temperaments. However the stud dog is just one half of the equation.
It takes two to make a thing go right, correct? The stud dog owner is at the mercy of the bitches brought to them to be bred. Unless we own the bitches. We are asked to “fix or improve”, or in the rare case, “compliment” a bitch to improve breed type and quality. So why do we own male dogs? They take up space in our home, don’t have litters of puppies, they eat food everyday, they are boys (that makes them smelly, right)……….most are bred to sparingly over their lives, what’s the point? We feel that the “BOYS” are the way to move forward. The breed is in dire need for more quality stud dogs. More availability of pedigrees, more variety of correct types, made available to be bred. However we have few (as a breed) The few we have are either under utilized or over represented, not much in the middle. So, Saturn and I have chosen to own beautiful bitches, but also make room for beautiful boys. In the hope that they grow up to be the bull rather than the steer. It’s always been my opinion in a breed that is dominated by “gorgeous girls” they must have some “handsome” brothers. Breeders are either not retaining these dogs or they chose to move forward with just the “ladies” and utilize other stud dogs. Whether it is an issue of economics, space, the uncomfortable feeling of maybe having to place a dog because it didn’t turn out as hoped………its better to have loved and lost, then to not have loved at all (once again being a show dog is tough, sometimes being an only dog and a couch of your own isn’t bad). Our breed needs these boys……..so next time your looking for a puppy, ask about the stud. Did they breed the stud dog, do they own it, do they have stud dogs at their home? Do they have any males at all? Are they growing any up? If breeders aren’t willing to keep the boys, where will that lead us? Breeding is two sides of a coin and it doesn’t work well if all you have are tails……..just my two cents!
